Spanish 1 Webquest

WEBQUEST PART 1: LATIN AMERICA OVERVIEW WITH MAPS
1. Visit the web site: http://www.yourchildlearns.com/geography.htm
2. Click on “South America Map Puzzle” and then click “Play South America Map Puzzle Online.” Make sure “Countries With Outlines” is selected, and then click “Play.”
3. As you complete the puzzle, fill in the country names on your blank map worksheet.
4. When you have finished, return to the main page.
5. Click on “Central America and Caribbean Map Puzzle” and follow the same steps to fill in the countries on your blank map worksheet of Central America.
6. If you want, you may go to this site when you're finished filling in your map and click “Latin America Map Game.” You can use your map to help you complete the game. Please do this with the sound off (or with headphones)! Turn in your map when you're finished.

WEBQUEST PART 2: VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT FAIR PRESENTATION

Basics

  • The Latin American Network Information Center (LANIC) is a large searchable database of information about all countries in Latin America.
  • The website for the US Department of State has Background Notes on every country.
  • The CIA World Factbook also has plentiful information on every country.
  • Latin World links to sites in Spanish and English about each country in Latin America.
Volunteer Work
  • The Peace Corps sends volunteers to several Latin American countries. See if your country is one of them.
  • Volunteers Abroad is a site devoted to placing young people in volunteer programs around the world. Click on the link for your country.
  • Idealist.org is a large, searchable database of volunteer jobs all over the world. Search for volunteer jobs in your country.
  • LANIC has a list of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in each country. These are often organizations that are looking for volunteers to work on projects in the country.
  • UVolunteer is a site that has information on volunteer programs in Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.
Nature and Climate
  • Lonely Planet is a major tour book company that has some information on countries on line.
  • Weather.com has weather forecasts for countries around the world.
  • Or look up the weather in a local newspaper (list on LANIC).
Culture
  • Use any of the sites above.
  • To find out the Spanish word for the nationality (the people who live in your country), check here.
  • Try Googling an area that interests you with your country’s name (For example: “Bolivian music”)
Need-to-know Info
  • The Universal Currency Converter can tell you exactly how much the currency of your country is worth in US dollars. Scroll through the list to find your country’s currency.
  • Use a site like Travelocity to find out how much it costs to fly to the capital city of your country from Philadelphia.
  • If you have time, check the local newspapers of your country to see what is going on.
